That Time on a Wednesday

‘I Wonder’ Original mixed media painting by Kirstie Page

She’d had a time of it lately. Dark days, somewhat patchy and faded. Then, one random Wednesday in April it changed: joy abundantly returned.

She didn’t change because of a momentous, grand gesture or life-changing event like you’d imagine. Rather, she changed because she’d rediscovered a long-forgotten vase that morning, tucked away at the back of the top shelf in a neglected corner of her home.

She vaguely recalled placing it there back in the 90s when House and Garden had deemed the style passé. It had been there, sitting quietly ever since. Today, as she glanced upwards, she realised that despite being in the shadow and lightly covered in dust, the vase was luminous.

It was well shaped, evenly balanced and perfectly proportioned to hold her favourite flowers in place. It may even be a rare collector’s item.  She couldn’t believe she hadn’t noticed that before. She got her step ladder and climbed - one step. Two steps. Three steps, knees slightly shaking, she stretched out her fingers, retrieved the vase and then returned to the ground.

She wondered about what other precious items she’d forgotten about. As she turned, holding the vessel lovingly in her hands, she glanced in the mirror that hung on the wall opposite the shelf. She closed her eyes for a second, took a deep breath, then slowly opened them again.

That was the moment she changed….
